I've been through the same process in the past and I've now settled on
Ubuntu Linux for my work machine.
There are a couple of applications I need to use that only run on
Windows and I have bought Cross Over Office so that I can run them. They
seem to run OK.
An alternative may be to go for VMware and run your windows apps in a
virtual machine.
But it really depends on what you are doing. Perhaps if you shared this
with the list you may get some specific suggestions for those
applications that you need.
