updating monitor information

Do you have the xserver-xorg installed? You should, and if so, it
seems peculiar that you don't have an xorg.conf file. Anyway, if you
have it installed try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg it will guide you
trough the configuration, you can just press enter in the stuff that's
already configured to you liking, then you will get to the monitor
configuration, where you have several ways of configuring refresh
rates, that should do it for you. If you don't have xserver-xorg
installed try installing it.

Greetings,
Jorge
