This may be related to the general sound problems I've had
with Hoary. Sound was working fine for me under Warty, as
was the rest of Ubuntu. Lots of little things broke in
Hoary, and though I fixed them all it took a lot of time.
Granted, I did do a more-thorough upgrade than I might have:
I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.11, for instance, and spent a
while hunting before I figured out that it was the inotify
bug.

Anyway, yes: sound under Hoary is questionable. Hoary's
sound outwardly looks like everything's behaving just fine:
xmms plays tracks as though it believes there's sound coming
out, 'alsactl restore' returns no errors, etc., etc. I've
done a ton of googling and followed all the instructions I
found there. Still no luck. My sense is that Hoary just
messed it up. If anyone knows how to fix it -- or even what
the problem is -- I'd love to hear.
