Good luck. I tried for months to get hardware acceleration working for
my ATI Radeon 9000 with Warty and Hoary and Slackware before them.
After spending a few hundred hours reading every little tidbit I could
turn up online, consulting with Linuxy friends more familiar with the
desktop side of things, and attempting every possible configuration
permutation, I'm now doing my reasearch at store.apple.com and having to
split my current use between a half-functional Linux and the
fully-functional but distasteful Windows XP. If I had the temporary
storage capacity to move everything from the reiserfs partition to
something Windows can access, Ubuntu would've been wiped already.

I'd even attempted replacing the card with a GeForce of the next
generation, but compatibility between GeForce cards and my mobo (Tyan
Tiger 230, S2507D) or somewhat more specifically the Apollo Pro 133A
chipset prevented the machine from even reaching POST.

I don't mean this to be one of those disgruntled flaming exit notices.
I do hope you get it working and I'd certainly be interested in hearing
the details.

Cheers,
Trevor
