UTF-8 problem

What sort of terminal are you using? Gnome terminal, a virtual console
(such as you'd get by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1), a remote connection, or an
honest-to-goodness dumb terminal? It sounds like it needs to be
reconfigured.

Is it an upgraded installation? Do you get the same problems if you add
a new test user account and login as that user?
