Actually, Fedora/Red Hat does this a little differently. They actually
update their current release AND the one prior with fixes and patches
using the actual version release number. Even minor updates and fixes
get written into and released in their current version.
The disadvantage to this, IMHO, is that there are almost daily updates
-- sometimes rather lengthy.
It would be nice if the Linux community decided on one method .... like
rpm .... which each distro could track updates and changes. I mean its
basically the same kernel. (unless of course you compile a custom
kernel)
