updating monitor information

hey all,

i just got a new monitor which can run higher resolutions and higher
refresh rates.  i've read past emails that direct me to edit my
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file to update resolution/refresh rate stats for my
monitor but the file doesnt seem to exist.  im running hoary final.

i read through XF86Config-4 and that did list possible resolutions at
various color depths but it didnt seem to contain any information
about refresh rates.

all help is appreciated!
