Yeah, I ran that test for 8 hours, not a single error reported, despite
one of the memory modules (I use 2x 256MB), was bought used/second hand
hence could be dodgy...

Ah, this is interesting. I remember someone on this list saying he cured
many weird problems by changing his hard drive. And indeed, my drive
makes strange noises every now and then, and I keep getting problems at
boot or shutdown, filesystem corruptions, fsck that run almost every day
instead of once a month, and sometimes says it's so corrupted that it
won't even boot, and asks me to fix it manually than try to boot
again...
Then again, the drive was given to me by a fellow Linux friend, so can't
really complain.
I will try to go down on my knees and ask my banker for 50 Euros so I
can buy a brand new drive. Will buy a Seagate with 3 year warranty, so I
can get a free one in case it becomes faulty and start giving my Ubuntu
problems again...
