Looks like you're doing it right to me, but like I said, I'm not sure of all 
the acpi stuff and when the changes were made. Googling I get a lot of acpi 
traffic around the 2.6.8 kernel although I see nothing listed as a specific 
pin pointable problem or generalized bug. I see bug reports for various 
functions under acpi.  It looks to me like most people back then were just 
running acpi=off to get around what they were describing as "pesky acpi" 
problems. ;-)

I didn't mess with the 2.6.8 very much 'cause I couldn't burn a cd as regular 
user. When I realized that, instead of all the garbage of patching etc.  I 
dropped back to 2.6.7 and stayed with it except for a couple of days I ran a 
Hoary preview and then up to 2.6.10-5. I think the Hoary preview had a 
2.6.10-3 on it and I also tried a 2.6.11 custom but ran into some more 
console blanking and problems getting my nvidia stuff all together.
