What is the model of the notebook? I have a Toshiba notebook with a
ATI mobility that has installed just fine.

Check your installation media, double check that the MD5 sum matches
and that the CD is burned correctly. Unfortunately, Ubuntu doesn't
have the check CD feature that Fedora does. It's a nice feature.

If you are SURE it's a video card problem, install a non-graphical
installation and then use apt-get to install ubuntu-desktop from the
CD. That should help since I'm sure your frame buffer display will
work.
