The only problem I could see is that if ubuntu-desktop added another package 
as a dependency, it wouldn't be installed by a dist-upgrade.  You could 
occasionally simulate a new installation of ubuntu-desktop and see if it 
wants to add any other packages and decide if you want to install them.
