disabling the synaptic panel applet

hi guys. i'm setting up an old machine for my roommates' 3 year old,
and i'd like to remove as much from the panel and desktop as possible.
so far so good, but i'm having trouble removing the synaptic update
manager thing. i tried poking around in synaptic but never found an
option to disable it. would i need to change the gnome startup scripts
or something?
