my hotplug is broken in hoary

hi,
i've installed the latest security updates (kde related i think) and
played a bit with a testuser (gnome and kde) and now removeabla media
doesn't work.
usbdisks, cd's and other removable media aren't shown in the places
menu, the computer window or on the desktop any more. though, media gets
recognized by the system:

rebooting doesn't work. restarting dbus, hal, udev and hotplug also
doesn't work. what can i do?
