On my laptop (600mhz CPU, 256mb RAM), I turn off all the "eye candy", and it
seems to help. Running kpersonalizer is the easy way to get most of it -- I
turn off everything in there except AA fonts.
I also disable shadowed text, background image, bouncy cursor, and turn off
all GUI/animation effects. All of those options can be found in the Control
Center (kcontrol) Appearance & Themes section.
