hello richard,
i would approach this type of situation from the system level instead
from a php-based software level. it seems to me that if you use
genuine network tools that were designed for this sort of operation
that you'll get a much better response time from your application as a
whole.
there are faqs and howtos out there for almost any task... so i'd go
with NFS, buy a few packs of cigarettes and brew a couple of pots of
coffee... *grin*
