open up your gconf-editor ('Applications/System Tools/Configuration
Editor'), the browse its internal tree to: 'apps/nautilus/desktop' and
tick on 'home_icon_visible'
There are other icons which can be enabled there, too.
This is the "right" way to do it in gnome.
