I've been somehat disapponted with the answers you have received on this 
issue.  May I refer you to the post by James Wilkinson under the 
subject "Re: Kubuntu Experience" which is SO much more sensible than 
that patronising wiki and does NOT assume you should not be asking 
about root passwords.

The info from  audriusb at homelan.lt  gave help I could not find 
elsewhere, so there seems to be a gap somewhere in the ubuntu 
documentation.  All of it seems aimed at the linux newbie desktop user 
and very little aimed at the more experienced looking for a more 
effective distro.
