xfce - problem with gnome apps

hi list! i'm using hoary and am having a small problem with a few
gnome apps, mosty totem and rhythmbox, which both say "cannot open
resource for writing" when i try to play a video/song with each in
xfce4. i think that this is some kind of sound problem, but i really
don't have that much experience with linux multimedia (this being my
first actual working linux desktop - however i've had a few text-based
servers on my net). any help would be appreciated.
