Point taken. However, /etc/ppp was only used as an example. I seem to
remember that there is some directory under /etc that has permissions
root.root 700. I can't find it atm though.

You are right that one should use the distro's tools, but as long as
they are not available for each and every thing I may want to change,
this won't be possible for many users. But yeah, sudo -s, thanks for the
reminder :)
