I had wifi working great on my laptop with Warty and NetworkManager.
But there were a couple of other things that didn't work so well. So I
did 'sudo apt-get dist upgrade' on it and then 'sudo apt-get install
kubuntu-desktop' and somewhere in there I pooched it totally. Not a big
problem as I'd backed up what I wanted to keep from my home directory.
So I wiped the hard drive and installed Hoary from scratch.
However, now I get no response at all from my wireless card. It's an
SMC2835W. I've read the wireless troubleshooter wiki at
https://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/WiFiTroubleshooting and I get an error
on step three. iwconfig gives me:
$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
sit0 no wireless extensions.
eth1 NOT READY! ESSID:off/any
~ Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00

~ Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
~ Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
~ Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
This is probably a very informative error message but not to me. Anyone
know what this is trying to tell me? I don't even get a light on my
card, so I'm starting to wonder if the card is dead.
Thanks for any help.
