Warty uses esd as the sound daemon and not polypaudio. During the
development phase of Hoary, esd was changed but didn't work as well as
expected so it was reverted.
If you cannot use skype while hearing other sounds, it is because your
sound card doesn't support hardware mixing. I haven't found a way to
make skype use a sound server. The furthest I got was to be able to
listen to other people but I they don't hear anything from me. This
while listening to music. What I did was to set up everything to use
alsa and I set up software mixing in alsa. I couldn't make skype to
use alsa through esddsp. I tried also with artsdsp (which is the
sound server used by KDE). That's when I could hear everything but
they couldn't hear me. I'm stuck there and don't know what else to
try.
