If I understand you correctly then you are saying kiss:
just download the original hostap tarball and then make/install
(and for that I need 'module-assistant' with some mumbo-jumbo like
 'update', 'prepare').

Of course this is the easy way. This will surely work.

But I wanted to make a neat 'deb' module package and also do the build
in my home directory and not in the root environment, learning some
'debianisms/ubuntisms' along the way. So I read the necessary howtos
and man pages and voila: failure.
(possibly because the hostap source package in universe is debian
kernel oriented, or some misunderstanding on my part?)

I would appreciate any hints on continuing along this route.

I am not a programmer but I have built my own (very primitive) rpm's
and rebuilt lots of src.rpm's in a /home/user/rpmbuild directory (so
I couldn't mess up anything vital). I am a longtime RH/Fedora user.

I am trying to understand how this works with 'deb's' and have only
been working with ubuntu/debian for a couple of months.

PS Why is there not a hostap-module package for the hoary kernel
in universe? My understanding of hoary-universe is that everything
included installs and works under hoary.
