Try "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-base ubuntu-desktop". This might
prompt you to remove some packages. Take note of the packages it's
removing, and reinstall them after the installation is complete. That
should fix things unless there's a worse problem lying around
somewhere. You might also want to search the mailing list archives, as
I think this problem has come up before.
