inotify is the new kernel fs update notification system (c.f. fam,
gamin etc for userspace utilities that use this). it is on by default
because this is a good feature. but there seems to be some side
effects in recent 2.6 kernels. which is why the 'noinotify' option was
added to the 2.6.11 kernel.
