X server annoyance fix?

Hi all,

I have a problem with my display when my laptop comes out of the "blank
screen mode".
By "blank screen mode" I mean when the screen turns off after a while of
screensaver.  I use APM, not APCI (oldish Toshibe Satellite Pro 6100).

When I move the mouse or touch the keyboard, the screen wakes up, but in
a weird distorted resolution, with about 2/3 of the bottom half on top
and the top 1/3  at the bottom.
To fix it, I just go to a console (Ctrl-Atl-F6) then come back
(Ctrl-Alt-F7), and everything is fine (at 1400x1050).

I am running Hoary (with Xorg), and I do not have the NVIDIA drivers
installed (cos it creates a black stripe of unused screen at the right,
which I could never get rid of in Gentoo), and the phenomenon was
exactly the same in XFree (regardeless of distro).

Any idea?
