Just out of curiosity, Lindsay, what Win programs are you trying to
run?  Might there be Linux equivalents?  Are you just trying to run
games?  Business applications?  Photo manipulators? Database
software??
Depending on what you are trying to run, you might find a very
satisfactory OSS equivalent that will further free you from M$.
