Hoary: gdm doesn't load

I just upgraded my stable box at home to hoary. When I reboot, gdm says
it can't display the human or default theme and loads the 'standard
greeter'. The standard greeter won't accept any text though, so I can't
login via gdm. I installed xdm and it works ok, but when gnome loads
none of the images appear (eg. show desktop button, trashcan,
Applications menu image, launchers on the menu bar), they are replaced
with white boxes with a red cross.

I tried checking my xconfigs but I couldn't see any problems. When I
set xdm to open my normal session (xfce4) it works fine. So the problem
seems to be very much gnome based.

Anyone have any idea whats wrong?
