Sound problems Hoary

I'm new to this list, but not to Linux. I've read the previous postings
and searched on this topic. I didn't want to bust in blind.

I have a SIS Audio card that works with various other versions and
distributions of Linux. But like others, I'm getting no sound from my
installation of Ubuntu Hoary. I have even used Skype with Xandros, Red
Hat Enterprise desktop, Fedora Core III and Novell Linux Desktop on this
computer. (Same computer). I test and write reviews of Linux distros for
LJ.

I'm starting to think that the hardware browser has a problem and/or
something is broken in the distribution. 

Has anyone got a handle on the sound problem yet?
