Ubuntu on IBM x40 laptop

I know that on my X30 suspend to RAM causes the display to crash.  I
haven't tried suspend to disk because this requires modifying the disk
partition from the default ubuntu install.  It only takes 1 minute to
do a shutdown and 2 minutes to start up.

Does anyone know why the display bugs out?  I used to be able to
switch to a console and suspend there but with Xorg that doesn't work.
