Change Screen resolution?

Hi:
I would like to know what I should do to change my screen resolution from 
640x480 to 1024x768, I am using a laptop and the screen is minimal for 
working with it.

	sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org  does not work
	
	if I open a "root-Console" it does not work too.

	I tried to configure xorg.conf "by hand" using xorgconfig and xorgcfg and 
they does not work.
