I totally forgot about ICS. I used to setup ICS (Internet connection
sharing) back before I got broadband and Linux had no
winmodem/linmodem support. If you can invest in a couple of ethernet
cables and a cheap hub or switch you can network the two computers.
Run the network setup wizard on your windows box. Windows will ask if
that is the computer that connects to the internet, answer yes. It
will then ask if you want to share the connection with other computers
on your network, answer yes. It will also ask for a workgroup name,
this can be a name of your choosing, the default for XP is MSHOME, for
other versions it is WORKGROUP. After you complete the setup and
reboot Windows will share it's connection with your Ubuntu machine.
You will also be able to then setup Samba on your Ubuntu machine which
will enable you to share files and printers between the two computers.
When you're ready to set this all up send me an email. I currently
have a home network running Windows, MacOS and Linux, all share an
internet connection, files and printers. It works wonderfully but
takes a little work to get setup the first time.
