hotplug is responsible for loading drivers for your hardware; you should not
disable it.

There are some instructions here:

to get a trace from the crash.  It would also be good (if you are able to
mount your root filesystem using the installer environment or other means)
to edit /etc/default/rcS and set VERBOSE to "yes", which should allow you to
see each module being loaded by hotplug.  Make a note of which module is
hanging.

I can't stress enough that bugs like this need to be reported to Bugzilla.
You discovered this problem well before the final release; it's quite
possible that it could have been tracked down and fixed.
