Well, I did basically that - what I had to do was boot into my Mepis installation on the other partition, mount the Ubuntu partition, chroot, and apt-get a kernel. Problem is even with the new kernel there were all sorts of problems, despite the fact the ONLY thing missing was the kernel.
I got FATAL errors while the sound modules were being installed..and all sorts of error messages from dhcp. I suspect the kernel I got was not the one the system wanted.
In the end I went back to WARTY, but now have to customize it all over again. Lesson one: Measure twice and cut once, an old carpenters rule.

1) Boot from a livecd
2) Mount your installed partition
3) chroot into you installed /
4) apt-get a correct kernel
4 easy steps to get a good kernel again :)
