Thanks. I tried it. 

Perhaps it couldn't make my radeon's framebuffer go, but qtparted
wouldn't run, so I just used parted on the commandline. 

Sadly, it was unable to expand my root filesystem "to the left" of its
initial block. I was able to grow it to the right, though. In then end,
I decided to re-expand my XP partition to fill the gap between it and my
ubuntu partition.
