that's what I have been doing for a few years: 3 big partitions + 2
smaller one on one disk. Win98 in one, the stable Linux on the 2nd
one, and the experimental Linux on the 3rd one. One of the smaller
partition is for the swap partition, and the other one is my
/usr/local; the last 2 are shared by the 2 linux installations.

Until last week, Warty was the stable linux used by the whole family,
while I was fooling around slowly doing the "perfect" setup and all
sort of little tweaks in Hoary in the other partition. Then last week
after the release, I moved the home directories of all the users from
the Warty to the Hoary partition, did a small change to grub, and
Hoary instantly became the default linux for everyone.

Next week I'm going to erase the now unused Warty partition, clone my
Hoary install to it, dist-upgrade to Breezy, and start playing once
again with the experimental setup for the next 6 months, without any
fear of disburbing the setup of the rest of the family who are still
using Hoary.
