I recently had the same problem. I dont have the thread link handy, but
some bright spark on UbuntuForums said this was due to the generic IDE
drivers being loaded before the IDE drivers specific to your
motherboard.
The fix mentioned was to comment/delete the ide-* entries
in /etc/modules and reboot - this worked great for me! DMA is now
enabled by default on my IDE HDD.
