If you run vncserver by it's self, rather than a 'shared desktop mode'
you get the same effect, only it's going to be hidden from the main
console.
If you have other linux machines, you can also setup GDM on the server
to allow remote connections, then use - if you run gdmXnestchooser you
can 'choose' your server, or any other machines that GDM is configured
to allow remote logins. (unfortunately these are not reconnectable
like VNC, when you logout/disconnect your session is closed.)
