Firefox and Java

Visiting some games websites (yahoo! games, Pogo) I got messages
saying that I wasn't java-enabled. I downloaded the jre 1.5.0.2
package and installed it, but ... it appears that it installed in it
my user directory rather than the expected location (/usr/java). I've
tried moving the files to the /usr/java directory, but it tells me I
don't have permission, despite giving the file full read/write/execute
permissions.  So...

(1) How do I get java to the right location(s)?
(2) How do I get Firefox to recognize I have java enabled?
