So any idea why I can't get it?  It's a new install aside from me
installing SSH, Apache and the base PHP.

I find it when I do:
# apt-cache pkgnames|grep php4-gd
php4-gd

But when I try to install I get this:
# apt-get install php4-gd
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Package php4-gd is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package php4-gd has no installation candidate
