[Hoary] Sound card issues

I got my sound fixed by uninstalling the Alsa-basic package with
Synaptic Package Manager. Marked it for a complete removal. this also
selected to remove the Alsa-utils, ubuntu-base, ubuntu-desktop and
gdm.... :???:
I lost not only Alsa but also the login screen. Good thing I activated
the root account and with this account I logged on and started X.
Installed all the above pakckages, rebooted and the sound worked.
Maybe if I had just re-installed Alsa this also would have worked, who
knows?
