You could:
  1) select "Recovery" kernel in GRUB menu,
  2) modify /etc/inittab and set default level to 1 (make a copy of /etc/inittab
working in this way) and reboot system.
Both methods will direct you to "Single user" mode and you will be able to
perfom all maintenance tasks.
