Getting SW midi to work with K/Ubuntu 5.04/ALSA?

I came across this guide in the WIKI:

However, it makes reference to OSS, I was wondering if this information will 
still work or if I will need to use a different set of steps?

Only reason that I'm asking is occasionally my .xsession_errors will complain:

ALSA lib seq_hw.c:446:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: No such file 
or directory

This is normally when the system is trying to play it's own sounds.
