Problems with Capture Card -- xawtv, tvtime, etc

I can go into my "Multimedia Systems Selector" and choose v4l....
When I do a test I can see the tv screen.

When I try to start xawtv all I get is a black screen, but I can hear the audio.

This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.10-5-386)

when I try tvtime, all I get is a blue screen that says no signal.

I think the driver is loading because I can see these messages:
