Getting back to desktop

Hi,
I just logged into the console and I need to get to the desktop.
Ctrl+Alt+F7 doesn't work so I gatgher the desktop package is not installed
and I need to install it.

I have issued the sudo apt-cache search package-name but can't
get the correct package name so I can't install it and maybe this
will help me get back to the desktop.

To convince myself that the apt-cache command works,

I issued the command against the gcc package

e.g

sudo apt-cache search gcc
and this listed the names of packages available.
So I need to do the same for the packages which apply to
the desktop.
