I'm using Eclipse and the Sun JDK (1.5) daily and they both work well for me. I
also used Sun's 1.4.x JDK on Ubuntu with no problems. NetBeans also works well.
Several of my co-workers use Intelli/J, but it costs a bit so I don't know if
that suits your needs or not.
I *think* that jEdit (http://www.jedit.org) has auto-completion available via
plugins, but I am not sure.
