1. Yes, I suppose they're on main.
The only thing in the universe seems to be phpmyadmin.
2. Anyway, how can I tell if a mirror repository is for hoary or for
warty?
For instance:
http://tinyurl.com/49pcd
is for what?!
3. Why things in main are not put toghether in a second ISO image? If
'main' is supported too, and the installation CD only has 'core'
packages, why shouldn't we be able to have a second CD Repository for
'main' packages?
You know, many of us are still on modem!
4. Even if Canonical cannot distribute stuff like support for mp3, dvd,
java, etc. etc., why should the user browse the forums for different
solutions and HowTo and the CD cannot contain a collection of HowTos
and Post-Install guides? (again, some people have slow net access)
For stuff like "using apache WITH php4 AND mysql", maybe a package
"lamp-configure" containing some scripts would be nice?
Also, a lot of reviewers don't even know that gcc/g++ and
build-essentials ARE ON THE CD!! Ok, let's not install them for all the
users, but let them know!
And a lot of stupid little things like: using Synaptics Touchpad.
Several HowTos, all of them... GOOD AND BAD at the same time!
1. bad thing: scroll areas should be enabled by default X config file;
otherwise, it should be better NOT to enable synaptic drivers, because
i.) Synaptics Touchpad works with the standard PS2 mouse driver (but
w/o scrolling features; but scrolling features of touchpad are NOT
enabled by default anyway in the config file!!!)
ii). Synaptics Touchpad AND the mouse: unlike windows, if you start the
system with a PS/2 mouse connected, your Touchpad will NOT work if you
disconnect the mouse, unless you reboot first! Also, starting w/o mouse
and connecting it later, then disconnecting, leaves you w/o any pointer
at all!
iii). all the mumbo-jumbo I saw about mixing "CorePointer",
"AlwaysCore", "SendCoreEvents", then about /dev/input/mouse or various
ways of making them both work (not necessarily simultaneously) do NOT
work on my XE3!
So, if the only RELIABLE way of letting it work, both Synaptics
Touchpad AND the mouse (PS/2 or/and USB), like in windows -- you
connect one, it works; you disconnect one, the old one works -- is...
making the touchpad working AS A PS/2 MOUSE (with a mouse driver), and
having unfunctional scrolling on the right side of the pad, then... the
QA guys of Ubuntu Team should leave Synaptics Touchpad commented out in
XOrg.conf!!
If Ubuntu core is about _things_that_work_, let's let it be so!
That's why, despite all my praise over Ubuntu to my friends, I can also
tell them: there is no Linux distro yet MATURE enough to replace
Windows...
