Question about extended attributes

burner at phoenix:~$ grep XATTR /boot/config-2.6.10-5-386
CONFIG_EXT2_FS_XATTR=y
CONFIG_EXT3_FS_XATTR=y
CONFIG_REISERFS_FS_XATTR=y
CONFIG_DEVPTS_FS_XATTR=y
CONFIG_TMPFS_XATTR=y

Looks like it's there. You probably just need to modify the /etc/fstab
lines to cause the user_xattr.to be set.
