It seems that after I upgraded to Hoary on the laptop, I still had a
2.6.8.1-5-686 kernel. On my desktop, I got a 2.6.10-5-686 when
upgrading. So I upgraded the laptop kernel to 2.6.10, and now it finds
the wireless interface. This problem solved!
What I don't get is how I managed to end up with 2 different kernels on
the 2 machines: I did both upgrades this afternoon, and I took exactly
the same steps for both (edit /etc/apt/sources.list to replace 'Warty'
with 'Hoary', Reload, Mark All Upgrades, Apply in Synaptics).
Well, anyway, it's working fine now.
