japanese input: let's add it to Ubuntu Starter Guide

I like the idea of a simple tutorial, but when I attempt the first step
I get the following error:
E: Couldn't find package uim

I am a Linux newbie, which probably explains my problem. Please advise.
I am using Ubuntu 5.04.
