dvd/streaming video problems

I'm having problems with DVD playback and realplayer video stream. I'm
running hoary. I've followed the wiki directions for dvd-video and
installed libdvdcss2 and totem-xine. Also the windows codecs adding them
to totem. I also installed mplayer. I can play mp4 and view a dvd I
received from an organization, which I believe is freely distributable.
The problem is viewing dvds I've purchased and watching say,
democracynow.org with realplayer. I can listen to streaming audio fine
with realplayer. With streaming video, realplayer loads and disappears.

These are some of the errors I get when trying to view a purchased dvd
with gxine or totem, under gnome. Initially totem will display the dvd
title and then disappear -

kbrede at ktb-laptop:~$ gxine
The program 'gxine' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 131 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error()
function.)

With mplayer trying to view a dvd I get -

Mplayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: decode-audio

Mplayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM

This is on a Dell Inspiron 8600.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kent
